#sblbookclub June 2019 Update

A few months ago I was starting to reflect on the 2018-2019 school year and starting to think about the changes I needed to make. I had tried going more assessment based with my SBG classroom and wasn't as happy with the results as I had been the previous year when I did reflective SBG. I wanted to be able to discuss grading practices with other teachers at all different places in the process of reforming their grading practices: teachers who had years of experience, teachers who were just starting to consider it, and even teachers who were skeptical.

So I created the #sblbooklcub, I picked three books to explore over three months and created a Google Classroom. I posted to Twitter and it sort of took off from there. We are two weeks into the book club and I have to say, this experience reminds me why teachers are so much better at what we do when we work together.

I feel most like a professional in my field when I can engage in reflection and discussions around practices with teachers from all different backgrounds. This group is challenging my thinking, inspiring me to dig deeper, and all with a level of grace, respect, and professionalism that leaves me feeling like I am a part of a community.

I want to share some of the resources we've put together these first few weeks and remind you all that there is absolutely still time to join us as we continue to look at grading practices.

Planning Resources

We ended the first two weeks looking at the importance of making the learning goals or objectives accessible to students and shared resources to help rewrite standards in student-friendly language.

When I first started down the road of "how do I make sure my grading system supports learning and is not just a tool for communication" I found my biggest challenge was not creating lessons or building proficiency scales, it wasn't student buy-in or parent buy-in, it wasn't admin support or all the things you would think would stand in the way of such a foundational shift in practices. Why I Am Leaving Canvas LMS for Google Classroom

I consider myself a team player. A few years ago when our district announced that the Learning Management System they were supporting was going to be Canvas LMS I stopped using Schoology and started learning as much as I could about Canvas LMS. Right away I could see the potential, there was a ton of back end data that Canvas was collecting, it was designed with mastery and personalized learning in mind, and you could complete customizations of your pages with just a tiny bit of knowledge of basic HTML. So I committed to using Canvas as my class website and used it to host all the blended assignments I was creating. Formative Assessment Isn't What You Think

When planning for a Standards-Based classroom you follow a clear series of steps : 1. Pick your priority standards and rewrite them in student-friendly learning objectives. 2. Unpack those standards to really understand what they are asking students to know and do. 3. Build rubrics or proficiency scales to help make the learning objective accessible for students and to create a clear understanding of how mastery will be measured. 4.
